The best windsurfing spots in Croatia

Umag
Savudrija

Savudrija, an old fishermen's village and tourist resort in the farthest north-western part of Istria, is the entrance to the riviera of Umag. It's located in one of the greenest parts of Istria (forests), featuring valuable small parks.
Umag is one of the most popular Istrian and Croatian summer resorts.
SavudrijaPopular place for advanced windsurfers is near the lighthouse in Savudrija. Surfers gather mostly at port. The lighthouse Savudrija is the oldest lighthouse on the Adriatic, built in 1818. If you're coming by car look for the road sign pointing to the "Port", just before the village of Basanija. There are 30 meters of lush green garden with Mediterranean plants between the lighthouse and the stony beach in front of it. Favorable winds and mild sea currents are excellent for sea sports like windsurfing, and the clear sea and its clear bottom is wonderful for diving.
Savudrija windsurfingWind surfers appreciate strong bura (northern) and jugo (southern) winds. Jugo causes big waves which makes approach to the water difficult. Also getting out of the water is not the easiest thing you can imagine. On the other hand strong bura, if you are not well experienced surfer, can blow you away all the way to Italy (have your passport ready just in case).
Another good place only for very experienced surfers is Punta Savudrija, nrth of Borozija camping. Jugo (southern wind) is very strong there which results in big broken waves greater than 3m. This is what attracts many surfers. Approach to the water during windy conditions is very difficult and if you are careless it can result in equipment damage or injuries. First timers to Punta should seek advice from the regulars.
