Lopud
island
Sunj Beach
One
of the most beautuful beaches in Croatia is situated on
a small, car-free island of Lopud. Lopud, northwest of Dubrovnik,
is a part of the Elafiti islands and Kolocep and the most
developed tourist place on Elafiti. There are fourteen islands
in the Elafiti group. The larger and more important islands
in the group are Kolocep (1.35 km2), Lopud (4.63 km2), Sipan
(16.5 km2), Jakljan (3.45 km2) and Olipa (0.8 km2). Only
three of them are inhabited (Kolocep, Lopud and Sipan),
with a total of about one thousand inhabitants.
There is only one settlement on the island, Lopud, situated
at the end of Lopud Cove. Boats for Lopud and other Elafiti
islands
are leaving from Dubrovnik's Gruz harbor. It is a nice 20
minutes sail.
There is only one settlement on the island, Lopud, situated
at the end of Lopud Cove, where one can stay in private
rooms and apartments, as well as two hotels. A valley with
tropical fruit, vine and olives stretches through the middle
of the island. Village itself has a small sandy beach.
Beautiful
reddish sand beach is located in the wide horse shoe bay
of Sunj (unj). The bay is accessible from Lopud
village on the island by a 1-km long footpath and is overlooked
by the Church of Our Lady of Sunj. The bay is almost round
with a narrow entrance, totally filled with white sand and
gets deeper only very slowly.
This beach is for those who prefer long sandy beaches. First
half of the beach is for textile sunbathers and second part
is for naturists. Sunbeds and beach umbrellas for hire are
aveilable. Sunj Bay sandy beach is ideal for a swim and
traditional local ball game called "Picigin" (volleyball
played in knee-deep water with an egg-size ball).
Another small sandy beachs is placed in the village by the
harbour.
Lopud is ideal for anyone seeking peacefull and tranquil
holiday, as well as an unforgettable day trip from Dubrovnik.
