Opatija
Riviera
Lungo Mare
Opatija, often called the Nice of the Adriatic, is one of
the most popular tourist resorts in Croatia and a place
with the longest tourist tradition on the eastern coast
of the Adriatic. Opatija is situated in the northern part
of Adriatic, just about 10 km from the town of Rijeka. It
is traditional and highly-ranked destination on the tourist
map of Croatia.
The
main Opatija's beach is the famous Slatina. It is
located right in the heart of the city, along Marshala Tita
Street, in the close vicinity of the most of the Opatija's
hotels. Here you can enjoy in the number of aquatic activities.
The beach itself is a huge concrete platform. If you want
more natural beaches while in Opatija, you
have to o to Moscenicka Draga which has the prettiest
beach on Opatija Riviera. It is a pebbly beach and it gets
very crowded in the high season. A bit further from this
beach, there is a small, but popular naturist / FKK area.
Rather than walk along the busy sidewalks, you may choose
to stroll along the famous beachside promenade - Lungo
Mare, a beautiful cobblestone walkway that extends from
Opatija on to Icici and Lovran. You
can walk the whole way along the sea side. It's lovely!
The walking path is paved, in whole its length, and offers
enjoyable moments of tranquility and romance.
Undisturbed by traffic, this walk along the sea front presents
a wonderful opportunity to escape the stresses
of everyday life. Construction of the promenade began in
1885, at the same time as Opatija's first two hotels were
being opened (The Kvarner in 1884, The Imperial in 1885),
and was completed in 1889 when Opatija was declared a climatic
health resort. In 1911, during the period of greatest expansion
of tourism along the Riviera, the promenade was connected
to the neighboring city of Lovran.
Opatija is famous for its beautiful old parks full of flowers,
Mediterranean and exotic plants. It is a true paradise for
anyone appreciating beautiful scenery, architecture and
views. Because of it, Opatija is an all-year resort, not
just for a couple of summer months.
